Gifts that Don’t Suck

I pride myself on being a ridiculously good gift giver. If it’s necessary to spend, then I’d rather spend a little extra money on something someone would really want/like/use than give them a tchochke that’s meaningless. Lately gift giving has been hard for me. Maybe it’s because I’m more self-absorbed this year, or maybe it’s because as we get older the things we can want or use diminish some? Or maybe I’m just not paying good enough attention to the people I love who knows.

Anyway, I started collecting some fun gift ideas because the fall, for us, is gift giving season. All of my sisters and I were born a week from one another in September (obligatory parental Christmas sex?), the husband is in October, followed by the bestie in November, and my mom and brother in December. Oh, yea, and then there is Christmas where we rinse, wash and repeat.

Some go to places that I start with are concert halls, theaters and stadiums. Whenever possible, if someone’s favorite band or team are playing I try to gift them with tickets. And tickets to a good Broadway-type show are always fun.

But lately I’ve been obsessed with the idea of gifts that keep on giving. Maybe it’s because I’m obsessed with birthdays? I’ve been known to celebrate my own for a week.

So, with that in mind, I present: Gift That Doesn’t Suck #1

3 Months of Orchids, price $149

I don’t know about anyone else, but I love fresh flowers in my home. And the winters are long and gloomy up here. Having these puppies arrive in January, February and March, might just be enough to brighten my long winter days. The company does more lengthy delivery combinations (for a price of course). And they also do different flower combinations, if Orchids aren’t your thing.

I think these would be a super cool gift for a mom from all the kids (perhaps chipping in together?) Something to remind her every month how much we love her, especially since everyone lives in a different state right now, le sigh.
